Module 4 Unit 2 - Perspectives on God, the Supreme Power, Source of Values

Introduction Unit 1

Understanding God is a subtle process which requires thought and time. God, the Divine, is presented as the Supreme Soul, source of all powers, virtues and values. For you to understand these concepts better, the Supreme Soul is contrasted with a human soul. Pondering upon these spiritual concepts increases your understanding which is deepened through meditation.

Many different names are used for God. The name Shiva is attributive and means point, seed and benefactor. This gives the form, the content, and the attitude in one word. God’s form is an incorporeal, infinitesimal, self-luminous point. God dwells in the incorporeal dimension beyond the material universe, a timeless, spaceless region of complete silence. God cannot be seen by the eyes but is recognised by the heart.

God is incorporeal and extremely subtle. When people think of God, their head, mind and attention usually go upwards. This indicates that at an intuitive level we know that God is spiritual, subtle, invisible and beyond.

The special act of God is to purify and empower human souls. Purification and enrichment of matter is an automatic and natural consequence of the purification of souls. God is known for creating paradise on earth, but not for creating hell. Hell is the cumulative effect of all the negative thoughts, words and acts of all people on earth. The Supreme Being is the ultimate source of values and is your focus to gain power to resist negativity. It is up to you how you use that strength.

God is not responsible for everything that takes place in this world, such as natural disasters, or the death of our loved ones. God gives everyone total freedom to act as they see fit. The Divine does not inspire or permit atrocities to happen, yet God is usually blamed for these and many other negative occurrences. The invisible is not necessarily God. Those who claim that negative events are inspired by God are confusing God with the impact of karma and sanskaras, the forces of negativity and the play of destiny. When you think of God in this way, you get cut off from that source of sweetness, wisdom and light.

There is a discernible change in your action and behaviour and a natural absorption of divine strength and qualities when you have a connection with God. By focussing your mind and intellect on the Supreme Soul, you experience light and might and, in perfect concentration, burn impurities out of the soul.

Points for meditation on different aspects of the Supreme Being encourage you to think deeply and to evoke the experience and meaning of those concepts. Your consciousness and awareness grow, and you become clearer about your relationship with God.
